I have come to the conclusion that writing this newsletter actually speeds up time. So here we are on the run-up to the weekend again. Bright sunshine when I look out of my window which is in complete contrast to the downpour that made me abort the dog walking 15 mins ago. Ah British Summer, it’s the best.

This week has been one of mixed blessings on the business front. I think I have finally started to get my head together with regards to my businesses and in what form I should market them. Now I know that this may sound a bit daft coming from someone who has been working online since 2004. But I think that I didn’t really have a strong view about where I wanted to go with my endeavours. I just kept on doing things to make money to pay the bills.

I had the search engine promotion/marketing (SEP/SEM) side of things and the internet marketing (affiliate products, business opportunity, personal development) side of things. But for some reason that I don’t understand I always kept the two separate. I think that maybe it was because for a number of years I didn’t think that I would be able to make money through affiliate sales. This is probably because I didn’t make anything to start with.

The really daft thing is that I have never really had to advertise my SEP business because it just evolved from doing business websites. The one time I did try to boost my profile I ended up with the phone constantly ringing with people wanting something for nothing. I then spent all of my time writing proposals that came to nothing and not getting any work done. I tried cold calling some of the local businesses which ended up with a couple of new clients but a lot of failures and I decided that this was not the way I wanted to build my business. So I just concentrated on getting as much work as I could from my existing clients and new customers would just come from referrals which was great.

This was probably a flawed strategy from the start, but it did pay the bills. By focussing on my existing clients and basically doing whatever they wanted I actually got distracted from the things that I did best i.e. SEP/SEM and as I have said before I ended up with all my eggs in a small number of baskets. Which is OK when times are good but a poor strategy during bad recession times. But we have touched on this before.

So I have been making a conscious effort to start to (re)build my business around SEP/SEM for small to medium sized businesses. I have a couple of eBooks on my Silent Salesman http://www.the-silent-salesman.com/wakeup.html site that focus on how to get your site to appear in the search engines and how to build traffic. These are going quite well and the articles which we have been discussing in previous newsletters (updates) will help to push more free traffic to my site. So all of this is going well and starting to build a steady but small income from the sales.

But I have done nothing positive to attract any new fee paying customers for my SEM/SEP services because I cant quite decide who best to target. I am spending too long deliberating when I know I SHOULD BE TAKING ACTION.

Quite out of the blue, I received an email from the affiliate account manager for Tim Godfrey & Steven Clayton of Commission Blueprint fame (which I was an affiliate for last year). They were announcing the proposed release of Commission Blueprint 2 in September. But also (probably the main reason) they were announcing their new product SEM Business Blueprint. Which is all about how to set up and operate a SEM/SEP business. Whoever it is who pulls the strings in this life certainly works for me from time to time. It actually shows you how to target local businesses and promote them using AdWords. So you become their AdWords account manager but by using automated systems you can do this in a fraction of the time. Thus allowing you to offer a great service to a larger number of clients. Because you work on a local geographic area costs per click are low. So you can usually offer your client a better return for their advertising budget.

I eventually decided to purchase the product (and I am glad I did) because it pulls together a lot of the things that were just not jelling in my current business situation. It has certainly set my mind racing as to which businesses I will target next.

Now I am not expecting you all to rush out and purchase this but take a look at the video on the sales page http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/sembb with an open mind. If you are thinking of embarking on the business opportunity route then potentially you can make a lot more of a business for yourself by following this.

Article Marketing Update

In update #137 I talked about the AMA system http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/ama well my 2 articles have so far been published on 26 different blogs. My second article as an acceptance rate of 100% not bad for four days elapsed time. This means I have 26 unique articles on 26 different sites which will provide 78 links back to my silent salesman blog pages with varying link text.

I am certainly getting to like this system. I have also been getting some Google alerts for the articles.

The article I submitted to ezinearticles.com has been published today (so it took a week) and so far I have had 2 different Google alerts. But it is early days.

I also took one of my AMA articles and spun it for my Squidoo lens and within hours this had been picked up and boosted my search engine rankings.

I now need to leave it alone for a few days – it can become obsessive and time consuming checking the rankings.

But I will keep you posted on the progress.

I hope your weekend has gone well. We have just got back from London where my youngest had to take his Grade 2 drum exam. Quite an ordeal for him because not only was his drum tutor there but also some of his friends (who are also learning drums). My lad was last on so it was a bit of a battle to keep the nerves hidden and maintain the cool exterior. But he did it OK and appeared play all his pieces with only a few minor errors. We have to wait a couple of weeks to find out the result.

I have just about got over the BT email fiasco (don’t worry I am not going to rant on again). Last Thursdays newsletter was titled ‘BT and Ultimate Customer Dissatisfaction’ and as normal my system automatically sent out a Tweet on my Twitter account with the newsletter title in the Tweet. To my surprise I got a Tweet reply from BTcare! “Glad you got it sorted in the end, we’re on Twitter if you have any other problems with your BT account get in touch.” I’ll remember that next time.:)

I have been busy writing articles and content for my blogs. There is a lot of evidence that whilst articles are still a great way of getting traffic (I have one article that I published in 2007 that still brings in 5 visitors/week) the number of backlinks from multiple submissions of the same article has dropped. So the old technique of getting many backlinks by writing a single article and submitting it to all the article directory sites does not work as well. In recent times I have just submitted my articles to ezinearticles.com and then just waited for people to reprint the article on their website or blog to generate additional backlinks. But I have done nothing to really test this.

So I have recently submitted two articles to ezinearticles.com with a tracking code in links so that I can see via Google Analytics how much traffic they generate. I also have Google alerts running so that I can see where they get reprinted on the web. So the plan is to see what I get from these two articles. Then I will submit a similar (but not the same) pair of articles to multiple directory sites using something like articlemarketer.com and compare the results. Currently I am waiting for Ezinearticles to process my submission now 6 days!

I have also started to trial a different service from Daniel Turner & Marc Lindsay of PLRPro fame called Article Marketing Automation (AMA). The system allows you to publish unique versions of your article to individual blogs throughout a network of high page rank blogs. So in theory you should end up with multiple backlinks each from a piece of unique content on a different domain. Which is exactly what we want.

I have written two articles and submitted them to the AMA system. This process takes a little longer because you have to write alternative phrases/paragraphs so that the system can spin the unique versions of your article. I will do a video of this sometime if you want. So it takes a little longer, it took me 2 hrs to write each article, but you end up with lots of variants to use elsewhere if you so desire. I have spun versions that have been used on my hubpages and squidoo sites.

So I have 2 articles going through the process with AMA which will drip-feed them on a daily basis. I have tracking codes in place and have set up Google alerts so that I can track progress.

I have written a post about AMA on my the-silent-salesman blog which you can see here http://www.the-silent-salesman.com/website-promotion-tools/niche-article-marketing-for-high-search-engine-ranking

Or if you want to check out the AMA system yourself then just go to http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/ama .

But I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Well another Friday is sitting on the horizon and judging by the grey sky and rather close feel in the air we are in for another storm tonight. A large proportion of my working week has been wasted listening to some patronising woman telling me that my call is important to her and that I will be put through to the next available operator as soon as one is available. This is after working my way through a series of questions to prove my identity and to establish the best department to talk to. Then the first thing the ‘agent’ asks you to do is prove your identity.

Yes help desks and call centres have almost brought me to tears this week. I am in the process of changing my bank and I needed to sort out all my direct debits but I didn’t know all the contact information. So in my infinite wisdom I cancelled them all and then waited for each company to get in touch with requests for new instructions. I have since learned that this is not the best strategy to adopt because it can cause you to miss a payment and then you just get bombarded with calls and letters. But at least I got the contact details:)

So the process of phoning each one began and took the best part of a day to sort out 13 direct debits! Out of the 13 there was only one (the last one) that was a good experience. Friends Provident are top of my list for customer support – I phoned a number, someone answered in a polite way, asked what the problem was, took my details and sorted the new direct debit in less than 5 mins! She was most surprised when I actually thanked her for dealing with the problem in such an efficient manner.

Now unbeknown to me I inadvertently didn’t sort out a £1.50 payment to British Telecom (BT) for an extended email service. And all of a sudden my talk21.com email account stopped working. The bad news was that this account is used for my PayPal and other systems for getting money so I could be losing out big time if it was not resolved quickly.

Now my talk21.com account was given to me for free by BT many moons ago when we still had our first dial up connection. Unfortunately at that time they didn’t allow POP3 access to the talk21 server unless you paid £1.50/month which is what I did.

Now I knew that my email account was suspended because the system told me so when I tried to check my password. So armed with this I went to the BT help desk (big mistake) to try and find out who I had to speak to. In the end I picked a number and after several aborted attempts got through to India! Only to be told that I didn’t have a talk21.com account! They even told me that talk21.com didn’t exist anymore and that I could not have been using it for a couple of years. In the end after about an hour they told me they had reset my password but not to try to login for a couple of hours.

I waited 3 hrs (working on other things) then tried to login with the new details and still could not get in. I tried once more and the system locked my account for 12 hrs because there were too many failed attempts to login. In desperation I filled out a customer complaint form describing the problem and how pissed off I was.

1 hour later I got an email from them telling me that they had reset the password on my main bt.com account (nothing to do with emails) and kindly they had sent the new login details to my talk21.com email address. Yes the one that I can’t access.

I gave up and decided to wait at least 12 hrs before trying again. The next call went much the same way except that they kept on telling me that I had a different email address on their system which they could access OK. But what about my Talk21 account! I kept asking. At one point they hung up on me!

Eventually after making some noise I got put through to someone who started to shed some light on the problem. Because my talk21account was set up when we were using dial-up it came under a different system. I needed to talk to someone on the dial-up side of BT and I was given a number to call. I asked if I could move my email account all to be on the same server and linked in with my broadband account but this was not possible because there was no mechanism to do this. I had to phone the dial-up team.

I called the number and followed the options and it told me to hang up and redial another number which I did. Another call to my friends in India but this time to someone who understood the problem and who told me with confidence and pride that he, would sort my problem where others had failed.

It transpires that my talk21.com account was suspended because the £1.50 was outstanding. But it also transpired that I should not be paying the £1.50 because they should have moved my talk21.com account over to the btinternet.com system when I moved to Broadband about 3 years ago! But don’t worry the happy chap said, I will sort this for you now. And with flurry of key tapping he reactivated my talk21.com account and moved it onto the btinternet.com system so I no longer had to pay the £1.50 each month. He just said, there you go all sorted sorry it took me so long! and went off to sort out another problem.

I am sure there is a suitable moral to this story – but I am just flabbergasted that it takes so much effort to get things sorted with BT. I dare say that after suitable therapy I will be back to normal again!.

Last time I quickly mentioned the MailWasher Pro system that I use to filter out all the spam and rubbish from my emails before I download them into my outlook. I had quite a few questions about the system from various people so I decided to make a small video about MailWasher Pro which you can see here http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/reviews/mailwasher-pro-review

Or if you want you can see the system here http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/mailwasher on the Firetrust site.

=========================================================

I am still getting loads of questions about article writing and what to do. Now I have just covered this in the Affiliate Blogging Course so I will give you a sneak preview of the video that I did on article writing which you can see here. http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/affblog/Course-part8/course8.html

It would be great to have some feedback on your experiences, fears and concerns about article writing. It is still a strong traffic generator and great link builder.

Just a quick update today. I have been camping all weekend with my youngest on hockey tour. The weather was bad (rainy) all day Saturday varying from a constant drizzle to a constant downpour. Everybody got soaked to the skin but at least it was not too cold. Still managed to play a few games and have a great BBQ despite the rain. By contrast today was mainly sunny with a few heavy showers and certainly more enjoyable. So as a consequence my body aches and I need a good sleep.

When we finally got back and all was unpacked I turned on my computer to see what I had missed over the weekend. I was faced with a total of 1,756 emails. Which to many would be a huge task to download and read. But not for me!

I use a system that learns from your choices and selectively identifies which emails are from recognised sources. So at a glance I was able to see which emails were spam and with a click of a button delete them.

Out of the 1,756 emails only 200 were legitimate and I had these downloaded within 5 mins!

So if you suffer from spam then this system is the best I have found take a look at Mailwasher Pro from Firetrust it really is a fantastic piece of software.

Check out –>> http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/mailwasher and banish that spam forever.

Website Promotion Success and Link building: Update 134

Well another Thursday has caught up with us and has brought a real change in the weather here in the UK. Gone are the scorching hot days and balmy nights we are back to warmish sunny/cloudy days and cool evenings. But I have to confess that I am probably to blame because I am off on hockey tour with my youngest this weekend and hockey seems to have a reputation with us of being played in the rain. So I forecast that the weather will turn nice again on Sunday late afternoon!

I had a call from a client today to tell me that they have decided to call it quits and close their business. This is obviously bad news for all involved but strangely the main reason given was not the current economic climate (which has not helped) but charge backs on credit cards. There appears to be little a retailer can do to protect themselves against fraudulent use of cards. You end up losing valuable stock as well as having to refund the real card owner. I always thought that this was the responsibility of the credit card processor. But apparently it’s not.

I think it is a real shame when a growing business has to close. This particular business was one that I helped out for a friend who was running an order fulfillment company (he has since gone to the wall). When they came to me they had spent a lot of money on an online shop but were not getting any traffic from the search engines. It transpired that the site had been built using iframes in a way that pretty much excluded the search engines from seeing the products. I had to tell the owner that they had been sold a bad site and that there was no way they would be able to rank on the search engines in its current form. Of course the web designer/programmer disputed that there was a problem.

To cut a long story short. I ended up providing a new site at just about cost price and have been supporting it at about cost since the site when live about 16months ago. Since this time traffic has risen to on average about 100 visitors a day mainly from Google!.

So it looks like my hard work will not be rewarded. I guess there is a business lesson to be learned here. Never give your services away for free unless there is a definite pay-back at some point in the future.

===========================================

On Tuesday I had to give some examples of promotion successes to a prospective client. So I spent a few moments going through the various sites looking for big wins. I was smugly surprised by the ongoing success of many of the sites the best was #8 out of 61.7 million pages on Google.com for the term – property search agents. I put a couple of examples on my blog which you can see here http://bit.ly/18dOMQ .

Now much of my promotion success is down to good keyword research, page optimisation and good link building together with hard work of course 🙂 . The thing is that you need to get all three right if you are going to see any real traffic/business from your website. The good news is that the keyword research and optimisation skill-set requirements to do this are just about static so once you know how to do it you can just keep on doing it to produce results. Sure new keyword tools may come along and make your task easier. But the basic thing you are trying to do has not changed for a few years.

Unfortunately this is not the case with link building. Over the years Google has constantly changed the rules to try and combat spam. So it is necessary to test things out or learn from those who you trust to give good sound information.

One of the trusted few is a guy called Neil Shearing from Scamfree Ltd. Neil has provided some really good and well researched products in the past and has just launched his latest on link building.

Now I almost passed on it because I know quite a lot about the subject. But something made me take a second look and I am glad I did.

The eBook takes you from start to finish on link building and importantly what works and what does not work.

It is all backed up with sound reasoning and a set of 5 videos to help you master the art of successful link building.

Get your copy here http://www.nofussinternetbusiness.com/linkbuild

The offer may have ended by the time you get there. But it is still very low priced. Sorry but I refuse to promote anything that I have not read/used myself so I have to hold back until I am ready.

MailWasher Pro Review

We all suffer from too much spam in our inbox but here is a great tool that I have used for a number of years to reduce the task of sorting the good from the bad.

MailWasher pro has been on my system for about 3 years and I couldn’t live without it.

I run multiple sites and look after many for clients each with its own email address. So on a good day I will get 300 ish emails. If I go away for even a couple of days I quite often come back to 1500 emails that need to be processed. Well Mailwasher Pro makes this a heck of a lot easier by learning my preferences and marking each email accordingly. All I have to do is run through the list of mails from new sources and decide what to do with them. A simple click will teach MailWasher what to do with each type of mail should we receive similar in the future.

MailWasher allows you to build complex filters that can look for certain text in different places and flag the email accordingly.

Take a look at this short video that shows it in action.

MailWasher is inexpensive to buy and easy to install and there are no monthly costs (which makes a change).

Take a look for yourself Visit FireTrust.com now.

See How Well I Promote My Websites – Website Promotion Services

Property Search Agents search on Google.com

We currently rank #8 out of some 61.7 million!! pages on Google.com for the term property search agents (without quotes).

Well it’s another hot day in the UK but a bit more cloud in the sky as we await the start of the Wimbledon Mens Final today.

I took the dogs out early this morning before it got too hot. Henry the 11 year old Long Haired German Shepherd has still got a fair bit of go in him but he tends to use his energy more effectively than Sparky the 1 year old Field Spaniel. We rounded a corner this morning to find a large Ginger Tom cat sitting in our path. Both dogs were on the leash so the normal procedure would be for both dogs to leap into attack mode take up any slack in the leash and make it pretty clear that a chase would be on if they were given the chance. This would normally be enough for any cat and it would quickly retire to watch from a safe distance. The dogs would then maintain the aggressive stance for a while then consider it a moral victory and continue on with the walk.

The first part of the plan was executed with speed and enthusiasm as usual. But then someone changed the rules! The cat just stayed put arched it’s back and squared up for a fight. Henry the German Shepherd snarled and showed his scary array of ‘cat eating’ teeth but the cat just stood it’s ground and started hissing and spitting. Now a German Shepherd in full attack mode is a scary experience which is why they are great guard dogs. To a cat it must look even more scary but this one was not showing any fear. Neither dog was tight on the leash at this point. So Henry took a step forwards which was immediately countered by the hissing cat but now with flailing, claw showing paws! Henry took a step back to stay out of range. The not-so-smart Spaniel however who is driven by instinct rather than self preservation tried to get a piece of the action and with fearless stupidity stepped forwards. The cat just turned and planted a paw across Sparky’s nose leaving a nice set of scratch marks. I pulled Sparky away and Henry just turned and followed still snarling at the cat but carefully staying out of range.

The lesson here is ‘By all means size up your competition but be prepared to back down if the potential gain does not match the effort required to win! Why fight a battle if it’s not worth winning! I fear that Sparky will take his time to fully understand this.

OK I hear you say so what the heck has this to do with Search Engine Promotion and Internet Marketing.

Well quite a lot really. I get to talk to many site owners (business and personal) and obviously most of them know that getting targeted traffic is everything. Without traffic any website must be considered a waste of internet space and equally any effort that is put into it will be wasted.

Now many just don’t understand how it all works. They just assume that it is enough to put up a website and some magic will come to play that gets them traffic.

But there are those like you, who know that they need to work with keywords and keyword phrases related to their business or niche. But still many people just target the impossible and assume that by some miracle it is going to work for them. There is absolutely no point in targeting highly competitive keywords and phrases for your website content or articles from day one. These are battles that are going to be difficult to win so why bother? Pick your fight with keywords that are less competitive that still have some decent traffic. Go for keyword phrases that are more specific as actually these will convert better. If you start to win the smaller keyword battles you will also start to rank for the more competitive ones as well.

As a rule I look for keywords that get more than 30 searches per day and that have less than 30,000 competing pages when you do a search on Google with the keyword phrase in quotation marks. Another great indicator is the allintitle command which allows you to search for pages with the search string in the page title.

Just write allintitle:+dog +grooming +school in the Google search box and the results that come back will only contain those which contain the words ‘dog’ and ‘grooming’ and ‘school’ in the title. You can obviously use your own keywords. But why is this useful? Well if someone is really serious about ranking for a keyword phrase then they will include that phrase in the page title. So allintitle is a great way of sizing the real competition before you start the fight.

You can see how to do this keyword research and much more in my ‘How To Wake Up Your Silent Salesman’ eBook which you can get here http://www.the-silent-salesman.com/wakeup.html .

But either way make sure you pick your Keyword Fights with care because it’s Not just about winning It’s about winning the right battles if you want your site to succeed.

Well today was probably the hottest so far this summer in the UK. It is really great to have some consistent warm weather for a change. This is not a sentiment shared by Henry my long haired German Shepherd dog who is spending most of the day lying on the quarry tiled floor of our utility room.

Yesterday we went down to London to see War Horse which is based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo about a young man and his extraordinary bond with his horse Joey. Set in the time of the First World War it follows/shows the real cruelty inflicted on horses during the war by both sides. It was a really moving story that was brought off by the fantastic life-sized puppets of horses. As an engineer by trade I was totally gob-smacked by the way they brought the horses to life and at times it was hard not to think that you were watching real horses on stage. As a horse owner I could see all the small movements that the puppets were making that made it all look so real. I must admit that I had to concentrate on the story rather than watching the horses. If you get a chance to see it it’s well worth it.

====================================================

Have you ever tried to profit in niches but not got the results you wanted…?

Niche marketing is one of the most lucrative strategies for making money online because you are selling to people who are fanatic about the topic.

On Tuesday I got my copy of Dominating Niches and have been going through it at every opportunity since then.

Now you will probably know that I do make some of my income from selling Clickbank products in various Niche areas. So I have been looking forward to this product since I heard about it a few weeks before it was due to be released.

It is written by a guy called Chris Freville who has quietly been dominating Niches for some time using the method he now shares with us.

So if you can follow simple step-by-step strategies you can learn to clone 40K a month niche marketing system in the next 30 days.

What I like about this product is the complete step by step instructions that take even a complete novice through the complete system. But it’s not just an eBook it comes complete with a set of instructional videos that again take you through the process.
